Judith Butler - On gender as performed or performative... to say that gender is performative is a little different because for something to be performative means that it produces a series of effects. We act and walk and speak and talk in ways that consolidate an impression of being a man or woman. Roland Barthes - Semiotics. SCORE - What is the product being sold? Score Hair Cream How does this advert create desire for this product? It puts a man being carried by women onto the poster to make them think they're getting what they wanted. What is the idea being sold? It sells the idea that if men buy the product then they will be liked by women. How does Score construct a narrative which appeals to its target audience? That Boss Life What is Judith Butler's idea? That gender is performative. Does this challenge or reinforce that? It challenges that idea because it says that men and women can do the same thing and be equal without it being questioned. How do developing technologies affect Media Language? Now people can use videos to advertise instead of still pictures, which they can then add better lighting to and layer sound on top. They can also use better editing programs to make sure they have the correct shot and then the ideal advert. Semiotics is the study of how images signify cultural meanings. Whose idea was this?
