COURSEWORK - The Last Dance
TRAILER LINK
STATEMENT OF INTENT
My film is unique due to disability not being a highly used theme in the film industry.
My film has many aspects that appeal to all audiences. For example, to appeal to male audiences it has the element of disaster within the car crash scene. Also, it applies to females due to the main character being a female dancer. Lastly, young people would want to see my film due to the coming of age element of it, and how they can relate to it. Sophistication in sound is shown by adding homo-diegetic sound in the form of a voiceover. This is then followed by the diegetic sound of the car skidding and crashing into the other. Non-diegetic sound then comes in as the sound of the thunder is heard only by the audience not the characters. Diegetic sound is then layered on top towards the end of the thunder clip and the sound of a heart rate monitor comes in. More diegetic sound then plays when the music starts to play again. All these changes in sound are accompanied by a fade in and out so that they blend well together. The editing is sophisticated due to the fact that the narrative can be clearly seen through the editing. Furthermore, there’s many fast- paced cuts which are accompanied by fast, loud music. This builds slight tension and makes the trailer seem more dramatic. Also, the editing ensures that the clips fit in with the music meaning that when the clip changes its smooth. Sophistication in cinematography is shown throughout the trailer, for example there is a slow upwards pan towards the beginning to create an establishing shot. Throughout the trailer there are also lots of medium-long shots which set the scene and let the audience know what’s going on around the characters. Also later on in the trailer there is a two shot of two characters filmed from behind an arcade game showing their significance in the trailer. Lastly towards the end there is a close-up of both a car wheel and a wheelchair wheel, this is to signify how quickly things can change as she was driving in a car in the beginning of the film but towards the end she’s in a wheelchair. The mise en scene in this trailer is sophisticated due to towards the beginning of the trailer there’s a lot of bright colourful things around her, for example, the arcade lights and games, the weather is nice and bright, the sweets and even the clothes the characters are wearing. However, at the end of the film the characters are wearing dark clothes, the surroundings are quite grey and the weather is bad also. Throughout my trailer there is intertextual references, for example, with The Black Swan. Both my film and The Black Swan follow the main character’s journey for the pursuit of perfection and the barriers that they face along the way to achieve that. The font and title animations reflect the character as they match the colours of her clothing in the beginning, also they are very soft which reflects the main character’s personality and her dance style. This trailer subverts stereotypes as it puts a woman of colour as the main character, who is a ballet dance, and they are typically white females. There is a direct appeal to the target audience (teenagers) as the film shows how a teenager can overcome a great challenge. This could then show other people that they can too overcome a great challenge.
