- Intertextuality is the shaping of a text's meaning by another text. It is the interconnection between similar or related works of literature that reflect and influence an audience's interpretation of the text.
- Hybridity is a cross between two separate races, plants or cultures.
Michael Jackson uses intertextuality throughout the Billie Jean music video. He often uses references from the musical Singing in the Rain. These can be seen as in Billie Jean, she has allowed Michael to have his protagonist moment by making him centre of attention due to the baby scandal. However, the paparazzi isn’t allowing his to fully have it by constantly following him around. Likewise, in Singing in the Rain, the female has allowed the male to have his protagonist moment by dancing in the rain alone with the police officer questioning him at the end causing him to stop.
